Tree planted for Haleigh Cummings

August 18, 2012 |  by  |  Blog

SATSUMA, Fla. — People came together to celebrate what would’ve been Haleigh’s ninth birthday today.

Family and friends released nine balloons, as requested by her jailed father, and planted a tree outside the classroom where she attended kindergarten.

Haleigh Cummings has been missing since February of 2009 while in the care of Misty Croslin.  Croslin said she put Haleigh to bed and the girl vanished during the night.  Haleigh was five years old then.

Croslin is now in jail on drug charges after marrying and divorcing Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings.  He is also in jail on drug charges.

Authorities have long said Misty has the keys to solving this missing child mystery.  Haleigh has been declared dead by the sheriff’s office but her body has not been found.

Her family is holding onto hope that she is still alive.

  1. What a beautiful tree. Just as beautiful as HaLeigh.

How shocking that the maternal side of the family totally ignored HaLeigh’s birthday -- NOT!

And once again, where is Crystal Sheffield? She hasn’t been spotted in McClenny in months. So where is she? And why are her kids there?

  2. Radio, thank you for this article on Haleigh Cumming’s birthday!

Were you aware the school has a room that is called “Haleigh’s Closet”? The school takes donations of school supplies or money, which the school uses to provide all the students with the school supplies they need and their parents can’t afford them. I sent in a donation so they can buy what they need in honor of Haleigh’s birthday Friday.

If you haven’t heard of it, I’ll email you the link.

    • Hi! Yes, I’m aware of it, but many may not be and I don’t have a link for it -- so if you would be kind enough to drop off the link for it here, I would appreciate it. :)

This is where I found the address of the elementary school with Haleigh’s Closet,it’s at the end of the article.

There are many schools have students who can’t afford supplies, clothes, etc. I am in awe that the school is honoring Haleigh in such a positive way. I hope the link works if not, I will repost when I get home.

Thank you for keeping Haleigh from being forgotten.

  4. Awesome the closet donation thing in honor of Haleigh Cummings. I’m an old school gramma and I took my grandkids every year for new backpacks, pens, paper, highlighters, etc. Every child should get a fresh and new start. You rock, crazy lady. Thank you for this post.

  5. That is a nice type of a memorial. I think it was long over due. Unfortunately, her disappearance did not get the same coverage as Caylee’s. I feel that maybe the Caylee Warriors or Angels whatever they call themselves, should do something like this. Caylee does not need some huge memorial. A tree planted at the school she would have attended or where her body was found would be nicer

  6. RadioDeJay, from reading comments where I posted this link, there are a lot of people who believe Haleigh is still alive and being hidden. Perhaps that’s the reason for the delay in a memorial. Of course, I’m just offering an opinion not a fact.

  7. Regarding “HaLeigh’s Closet” at Browning Pierce Elementary School -- The Palatka Daily News was supposed to run the announcement twice last week, prior to the tree planting, leaving plenty of time for people to bring in donations. They failed to do so. (The did have a nice front page article the day following HaLeigh’s birthday, though). However, that didn’t allow the word to spread regarding the donations to the school, and the only people that knew about the school donations were the ones that were following the Facebook page set up by the family. Therefore, donations in HaLeigh’s Closet are running sadly low. No one wants her closet to ever run empty. The day of the tree planting, there were some donations -- enough to fully supply 10-12 children with everything they would need for an entire school year (backpack and all supplies). There were also miscellaneous supplies and some monetary donations given to the school so that they can buy whatever they need. *The family never has any access to the money and supplies, the school handles all donations.

If anyone would like to donate, they can do so by either sending school supplies or a check to:

    Browning Pearce Elementary School
    100 Bear Blvd
    San Mateo, FL 32187

(And make sure to make a note that it is for HaLeigh’s Closet)

*Just passing that information along in case anyone wants it. Hope you don’t mind, Radio! :)

  8. Haleigh’s Closet was started by Haleigh’s maternal family the year of her disappearance. They don’t wait for milestone days to honor her, they do so every day without cameras and an audience.

I saw Crystal last week in Baker County. After all these years I can’t understand why Haleigh’s paternal family continues to spread rumors like the one above.

  9. HaLeigh’s Closet was started by the maternal side of the family. They ran it that first year and failed to keep it up. That is why the paternal side of the family has taken it over, so it won’t go empty.

If Crystal is now in Baker County, it’s a new thing. She hasn’t been there in months. So either you are trying to throw people off track of where she really is or she recently came back. Because she HAS been gone. And for a long time. And HaLeigh’s paternal family isn’t spreading any lies. It doesn’t take someone related to HaLeigh to know EXACTLY who and what Crystal is. They may have snowed some people, but not everyone. A lot of people can see through Crystal -- AND her entire family.
